The cider gum — Eucalyptus gunnii — brings something no other hardy tree does: a cloud of rounded, silver-blue foliage, aromatic when brushed, evergreen through the British winter. In a large pot on a sunny terrace it reads as instant Mediterranean structure; in the ground it becomes a fast, graceful screen. A young tree, honestly sold. This is a young eucalyptus — quick to establish and quick to reward, but it wants one thing from you: a confident prune each spring. Cut back hard and it thickens into a dense, self-supporting silver bush that keeps the rounded juvenile foliage florists prize. Left unpruned, eucalyptus grows tall and leggy — so we'll say what most sellers won't: buy it planning to prune it. Our care guide shows you exactly how. Best space & place. Full sun, and shelter from strong wind while young. Happy in a large container (ø45cm+, heavy for stability) with loam-based compost and sharp drainage — a pot keeps it to an elegant 2–3m. Hardy to around −15°C once established. Watering & feeding. Water generously in its first two summers, then it becomes impressively drought-tolerant.
