Product Description: The Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir 2024 is a benchmark South Gippsland expression sourced from the estate’s original vineyard at Leongatha, first established in 1979. Bass Phillip’s Estate, Premium and Reserve Pinot Noirs originate from the same 3.5-hectare vineyard, with dedicated rows and sub-plots consistently selected for each individual cuvée. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 1993 and biodynamically since 2002, with low yields, no irrigation and a strong emphasis on achieving natural balance. Dense planting and severe crop restriction are central to the estate’s pursuit of perfume, texture, complexity and mineral definition. In the cellar, Bass Phillip favours natural yeast, minimal handling, gentle extraction and bottling without fining or filtration. The Fourrier-led evolution of the estate moved its approach toward complete destemming, gentle pre-maceration, meticulous fruit selection and restrained use of new oak, preserving purity rather than overt barrel character. The 2024 Premium Pinot Noir combines dark cherry and woody herbs with Szechuan pepper, liquorice, earthy tones, meaty nuances and cola-like complexity. Its palate is firmly structured, with chewy tannins and vibrant acidity carrying the wine towards a powerful and sustained finish. Though concentrated and serious, it remains balanced and energetic, with the architecture to reward patient cellaring. Bass Phillip’s own guidance notes that the Premium Pinot Noir can improve over ten to fifteen years, making this an excellent candidate for a carefully managed cellar.
