Bamburgh Sunrise

I recently purchased some metallic watercolour paints by Winsor and Newton. Although I’m no stranger to using gold leaf in my paintings, it’s usually when I’ve been painting in oils. A good example is my painting of the Angel of the North. However, I’d never come across metallic watercolour paint and was curious as to how they would work. I immediately went to work on a view of Grey Street – Gold Light where the use of the metallic paint would be valid to the overall painting. I then had a go a painting one of my favourite views of a Bamburgh Sunrise featuring the castle. I often use this view when giving painting lessons to students wanting to know the basics of watercolour painting. Instead of using Cadmium Lemon as the base wash I used the metallic Yellow Gold for the sky and beach. For the next wash, Metallic Red Copper was used instead of Rose Madder. When you look at this small A5 watercolour at different angles you can see the metallic effect coming into play. Overall the effect is pleasing and very evocative of the rich warm light you can enjoy when being on the beach at Bamburgh early morning. Price unframed.
