We want our lives to matter. We want to believe that our suffering has purpose, that our choices carry meaning, and that we're capable of becoming more than we are today. There is nothing misguided about that search. It may be one of the most honest expressions of what it means to be human. The danger isn't in the longing. It's in how easily longing can be satisfied by appearances. Real transformation asks for patience, humility, and the willingness to remain uncertain while we continue searching. Those are difficult things to live with. Sometimes it's easier to learn the language than to wrestle with the questions, easier to repeat the gestures than to surrender to what they ask of us. The search doesn't disappear. It simply becomes harder to tell whether we're moving toward something greater than ourselves, or learning to feel at home inside a shell of the actual.
