Jazz Performance Each Ensemble is allocated a maximum of 45 minutes for performance and clinic. Intermediate (Grades 3-4) Ideal for: More experienced middle school bands, high school bands, or developing players with a solid foundation in jazz basics. Grade 3 (Medium Easy): Description: Appropriate for bands with a few years of jazz experience. These pieces feature more complex rhythms, harmonies, and extended forms. Players are expected to understand basic jazz articulations and style. Typical Characteristics: Syncopated rhythms, more independent lines for each section, and moderate use of jazz articulations like accents and staccatos. Solos may require basic improvisation over more varied chord changes. Grade 4 (Medium): Description: Suitable for high school bands that have a strong grasp of jazz fundamentals. The music at this level is more challenging, with more intricate harmonies, advanced rhythms, and greater demands on individual players. Typical Characteristics: Complex rhythms including triplets, more challenging syncopation, use of extended harmonies (like 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths), and more developed form. Solos often require moderate to advanced improvisational skills.
