Tokoname-yaki Kyusu by Fujita Tokuta - Handmade Japanese Teapot | FUSHI
Crafted by Kansuke Omata (小俣冠丞), a rising young artisan in Tokoname. This striking flat kyusu is a testament to the future of Japanese ceramics. Omata’s philosophy is beautifully uncompromising: a teapot must, above all else, be engineered to brew truly delicious tea. Every element of this vessel has been rigorously pursued and refined to achieve that single goal. What sets Omata apart is his profound dedication to the earth itself. Rather than using standard commercial clay, he personally processes multiple types of raw earth. Using a traditional water-purification method (suihi), he meticulously adjusts the particle size and iron content of each clay before blending them. Through endless prototyping and firing, he finds the perfect harmony of strength, function, and raw beauty. The result is this stunning, wide-bodied teapot. Its flat form allows premium tea leaves the space they need to fully expand, while its unglazed, stone-grey surface, adorned with delicate, organic veining pattern formed by the traditional Mogake (藻掛け) technique, offers a deeply grounding, tactile experience in the hands.
