The Grand Canal, Venice by Turner Pocket Square
Venice, from the Porch of Madonna della Salute, by J.M.W. Turner, c. 1835 100% Silk Hand Rolled Printed in Macclesfield, England 42cm x 42cm Turner visited Venice three times and painted it obsessively from memory long after. This canvas, made around 1835, catches the Grand Canal at its most theatrical: the Campanile rising on the left, gondolas and trading vessels caught in the amber haze of a Venetian afternoon, the whole scene dissolving at its edges into light. It is less a topographical record than a mood. Printed onto Mulberry silk and finished with a hand-rolled edge, the luminous blues and warm golds translate exceptionally well to the breast pocket, particularly against navy or camel.
