It was the only North American unit to take part in the Gallipoli campaign and later fought on the Western Front in France and Belgium. The regiment is most remembered for its devastating losses on 1 July 1916 at Beaumont-Hamel during the Battle of the Somme, where it suffered over 700 casualties in a single morning. Despite this, the regiment continued to serve in major operations, earning the title “Royal” in 1917 for its service and sacrifice.
