Rookwood (American, 1880-1967) Lenore Asbury (American, 1866 – 1933) ‘Vellum’ Vase, c. 1909 glazed pottery 9 ½” high x 5 ¼” diameter Description: An early 20th century American Arts & Crafts Rookwood ‘Vellum’ line vase hand-painted by Cincinnati born decorator Lenore Asbury. Grapes drape down from a vine wrapped around the cinched neck of the 1665D form vase, the cylindrical body gradually tapers towards the drop, the base and mouth a deep concord blue. The oversaturated blue/green glaze runs slightly, reflecting a day full of a verdant misty dew. Markings: incised on base with Lenore Asbury signature; incised ‘x’; Rookwood mark for 1909; form 1665D / Y “Lenore Asbury was born on April 7, 1866 in Cincinnati Ohio. Like many Rookwood artists, she attended the Cincinnati Art Academy. She worked at Rookwood Pottery for many years, from 1894 until 1931, although she returned occasionally to decorate pieces. She worked in a wide range of glazes including Iris and Vellum. Lenore Asbury passed away on September 1, 1933, just two years after leaving Rookwood, and she is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery.”
