Winemaking Notes: The 2021 Cuvée Kaela Pinot Noir from Komorebi Vineyard is the culmination of a season marked by resilience and focus. With lower yields and a temperate end to the growing season, each tank of Pinot Noir was exquisite. Such conditions allowed for the purity and coastal energy of the vineyard to come through. Fermented 100% whole cluster in concrete then aged sur lie for 22 months in large neutral oak demi-muids (600L), the inherent umami complemented by the natural acidity of this site all combine to see a wine with its own unique voice. The result is an energetic, vibrant Pinot Noir—one that celebrates the precision of the vintage and the rugged, mineral-driven spirit of Komorebi Vineyard on the West Sonoma Coast. Vintage Notes: The 2021 growing season at Komorebi Vineyard was notably dry, with historically low rainfall and a winter that left soils depleted of moisture. Early budbreak set the tone for the year, and throughout the summer, warm days alternated with the Pacific’s cooling marine fog, allowing the fruit to ripen gradually and evenly. The persistent drought led to smaller yields, but the combination of coastal breezes and steady, moderate temperatures maintained vine health and resulted in grapes with exceptional concentration and natural acidity. These conditions, unique to our site just four miles from the Pacific ocean, truly defined the 2021 Cuvée Kaela Pinot Noir and showcased the distinct energy of the vineyard.
