An outstanding Belle Époque ruby and diamond ring that transports one to a rose garden. Of French origin, acquired in England — three rows of three bezel-set old cut diamonds flanked by eight calibré-cut natural rubies in a wave pattern, and remarkable for every stone in it. The construction is as considered as the stones themselves: three arms on each side of the shank lead up to the central composition, where three rows of three old European and rose cut diamonds (.44ctw) sit in original settings of fine quality. Eight calibré-cut natural rubies (.30ctw) ripple up the shoulders in a wave that gives the ring extraordinary movement for its modest scale. At 3.64 grams and size 6, it is a ring that wears lightly and sits beautifully. No hallmarks are visible, but the construction, the cut of the stones, and the character of the platinum and 18ct gold work place it firmly in the finest tradition of late 19th century French Belle Époque jewellery.
