In a medieval world plagued by shape-shifting monsters called Yoma that feed on human flesh, the only effective defense is the Claymore — human-Yoma hybrid warriors created by a shadowy organization, recognizable by their silver eyes and massive broadswords. They are feared and despised by the people they protect. Clare is the lowest-ranked of the current generation of Claymores, Number 47, driven not by duty but by a personal vendetta traced back to a warrior named Teresa whose fate she witnessed as a child. Traveling alongside the young orphan Raki, who follows her with nowhere else to go, Clare moves through a darkening world as the organization's true agenda comes into focus and a catastrophic threat assembles that will force every Claymore alive to fight — and to confront what they are willing to become. Claymore is a 26-episode dark fantasy series produced by Madhouse, directed by Hiroyuki Tanaka, written by Yasuko Kobayashi, and based on Norihiro Yagi's manga serialized in Monthly Shonen Jump and later Jump Square. It aired on Nippon TV from April to September 2007 and is notable for the quality of its action animation and for the all-female main cast, each warrior given distinct design and personality across the organization's numbered ranking system. The anime delivers an original ending as the manga was still ongoing during production. The manga ran from June 2001 to October 2014 and was licensed in English by Viz Media across 27 volumes. FUNimation released Claymore on DVD in six volumes from October 14, 2008 to July 14, 2009, with the artbox included with Volume 1. Special features across the set include cast commentaries, auditions, TV commercials, textless songs, trailers, and interviews.
