Historic camouflages: Desert Night Camo The United States Army used Desert Night Camo (DNC) during the Gulf War. It was designed to help conceal soldiers from the enemy’s night-vision devices by creating streaks and blotches that disrupted the wearer’s outline. As night-vision technology evolved, DNC was phased out. 6-Color Desert 6-Color Desert, commonly nicknamed “chocolate chip,” is a classic camouflage pattern developed by the U.S. military for desert operations. Introduced in the early 1980s, it gained major recognition during the Gulf War. The pattern features a light sand background with broad light green and brown shapes, plus distinctive black-and-white spots meant to mimic rocks and their shadows – hence the “chocolate chip” association.
