Henri Matisse Poésies Figural Plate, Circa 1970

An elegant vintage illustrated plate after Henri Matisse, originating from Poésies, the celebrated collaboration between the French modernist artist and Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé. Originally conceived in 1932 for the prestigious Swiss publisher Albert Skira, Poésies remains one of the most distinguished examples of twentieth-century illustrated bookmaking. Matisse created a remarkable series of etchings to accompany Mallarmé’s poetry, translating the written word into compositions of extraordinary simplicity, fluidity and grace. This captivating composition depicts an expressive, abstracted face surrounded by an intricate arrangement of sweeping, rhythmic lines. Executed in Matisse’s unmistakable linear vocabulary, the image demonstrates the artist’s extraordinary ability to suggest movement, emotion and form through an economy of gesture. The interplay of delicate facial features and boldly curving ornamental forms lends the composition an almost sculptural quality. Presented in a custom Italian black wood and gilt frame, the artwork is beautifully complemented by the frame’s rich contrast of dark wood and warm gold detailing. Housed under glass, the traditional character of the framing provides a striking counterpoint to the modernity of Matisse’s composition, creating a sophisticated and timeless presentation. A distinctive example of Matisse’s celebrated approach to illustrated literature, this piece would make an elegant addition to a thoughtfully collected interior, particularly appealing displayed individually or alongside other plates from the Poésies series.
