Introduced in 1984, the Breitling Chronomat marked a defining moment in the history of the Swiss manufacturer. Developed in collaboration with the Italian aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori, the model represented Breitling's return to the mechanical chronograph at a time when quartz technology had profoundly transformed the watch industry. Designed under the direction of Ernest Schneider, the Chronomat combined the technical heritage of Breitling's aviation instruments with a distinctive new aesthetic. Its rotating bezel, featuring four characteristic rider tabs, substantial case construction and integrated-looking bracelet established a design language that would become synonymous with the brand throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. The Chronomat also played an important role in the revival of the mechanical chronograph, adopting the reliable Valjoux 7750 automatic movement, a robust calibre whose architecture proved particularly suitable for everyday use. The present example, reference 81950, is an attractive two-tone configuration combining steel and yellow gold accents with a black dial and contrasting gold-tone chronograph registers. The combination creates a particularly striking interpretation of the Chronomat's unmistakable design, balancing its instrumental origins with the more expressive aesthetic of the period. One of its most distinctive features is the original Rouleaux bracelet, whose cylindrical links create an immediately recognisable profile. Closely associated with early Chronomat models, this bracelet has become an important element of their historical identity and collector appeal. Preserved in its characteristic steel and gold configuration, this example is accompanied by its original box, booklets and warranty documentation, making it a particularly complete representation of one of Breitling's most significant modern-era chronographs. Today, early Chronomat references are increasingly appreciated for their historical relevance, unmistakable design and connection to the mechanical watchmaking revival of the 1980s.
