Val do Salnés is where Albariño started — the oldest of the five Rías Baixas subzones, sitting right on the Atlantic, where cool damp air off the water slows ripening and holds acidity high. Viña Cartín has farmed here since 1977 and owns every one of the 50 acres it works, moving into a restored old winery in the heart of the valley in 2003. Vines average about 30 years. Stainless steel fermentation keeps the aromatics intact: white peach, grapefruit and green apple, with a salty snap and firm acidity right through the finish.
