Philippine Species Box
Four coffee species, all grown in the Philippines, in one box: arabica, robusta, liberica, and excelsa, from four producers across Luzon and Mindanao. Each comes as a 50 g pouch of whole bean coffee, roasted for filter. Species sets the starting point for how a coffee tastes, before the farm, the process, or the roast. Brew all four the same way and taste where they differ. In this box, liberica and excelsa both show jackfruit. Arabica: Finca de Garces Pangantucan, Bukidnon. Ethiopian Landrace, three-phase fermentation. Arabica carries more sugar and natural oils, and tends toward sweeter, brighter cups. The farm was named Best Arabica in the Philippines at the 2024 Philippine Coffee Quality Competition. Notes: jasmine, strawberry, orange marmalade, lemon Robusta: Rey John Basco Sen. Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat. Experimental fermentation. Robusta carries about twice the caffeine and usually a heavier body. The farm was named Best Robusta Coffee in the Philippines at the 2024 Philippine Coffee Quality Competition. Notes: prune, pineapple, green apple, milk chocolate Liberica: North Star, Estanislao Gepte Upi, Maguindanao. Natural. Known locally as kapeng barako. The farm received a silver (Gourmet Argent) from AVPA in Paris in 2020. Notes: chrysanthemum, jackfruit, mandarin orange, honey Excelsa: Aga Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Nasugbu, Batangas. Natural. Notes: jackfruit, orange, green apple, granola, umami
