Matisse & the Magic of Color: A 4-Week Painting Workshop!

Step into the world of Henri Matisse in this immersive four-week painting course! Perfect for all skill levels, this semi-private class explores Matisse’s iconic works, his techniques, and the magic of color through Fauvist painting. Not sure what Fauvism (Foh-viz-um) is? Don’t worry, you’ll learn! Fauvism is just the fancy art name for the style Matisse is best known for: bright, pure color with expressive form and composition. Each week, we’ll dive into Matisse and his role in pioneering the Fauvist style, from his brushwork and bold approach to color to the emotion in his artwork. You’ll start by painting a master copy of one of Matisse’s famous works to understand his process, then apply those techniques to create your own original Fauvist-style painting. We’ll work in acrylics for this class, and you’re welcome to add oil pastels or wax crayons too! Through guided instruction, you’ll learn: How Matisse captured color and movement Bright brush techniques and color blending, plus some color theory The power of loose, expressive strokes We’ll meet every Thursday morning from 10am–12pm for four weeks. The price covers all four sessions. Dates: April 8, 15, 22, and 29 You’re welcome to bring your own materials, or you can add our artist-grade acrylic kit for $85. These supplies will last long after your class ends, so you can keep practicing and playing on your own between sessions. The class kit includes: 4 oz professional-grade acrylic paint in cadmium red, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, white, and black Palette knife Pad of watercolor/acrylic paper (30 sheets) Two Holbein Gold brushes After registering, you’ll receive an email with a course outline and a list of suggested supplies for anyone bringing their own.
