Green Toadstool Leather, Sarcophyton sp., is a hardy leather coral known for its distinctive mushroom-like growth form and excellent polyp extension. This specimen displays a broad, rounded cap covered with numerous elongated polyps featuring bright fluorescent yellow-green coloration. The polyps rise prominently from the surface of the cap, creating a dense, flowing appearance when fully extended. Their vivid green-yellow tips contrast against the warmer golden stalks and the pinkish to cream-colored surface of the leather, producing an attractive multicolor effect under reef aquarium lighting. Sarcophyton species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide most of their nutritional requirements. They can also absorb dissolved nutrients and capture fine suspended organic material from the surrounding water. Toadstool leathers are well known for periodically retracting their polyps and developing a smooth or waxy surface before shedding a thin outer layer. This is a normal part of their growth and maintenance process. Because species-level identification within Sarcophyton generally requires examination of microscopic skeletal elements called sclerites, coloration and external appearance alone are not sufficient for a reliable species identification. Sarcophyton sp. is therefore the most scientifically appropriate designation for this specimen. Care Guide: Scientific Name: Sarcophyton sp. Care Level: Easy to Moderate Lighting: Moderate Water Flow: Moderate, variable flow Placement: Middle areas of the aquarium, adjusted according to lighting intensity Temperament: Semi-aggressive; allow adequate space from neighboring corals Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; can also utilize dissolved nutrients and fine suspended organic material Growth Form: Upright stalk supporting a broad fleshy cap covered with extendable polyps Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef aquarium temperature and salinity. Keep alkalinity and other major water parameters reasonably stable, with measurable nitrate and phosphate rather than excessively nutrient-depleted conditions. Special Considerations: Provide enough variable water movement to help the coral periodically shed its outer surface layer. During shedding, the polyps may remain closed for several days before reopening. Toadstool leathers can grow substantially and may release chemical compounds that affect neighboring corals, so provide adequate space and maintain good aquarium filtration and water circulation.
