Laura – A Textile Mouse Sculpture

Laura is an Activist mouse. Quiet and unassuming, she spends her time amongst discarded fabrics and forgotten scraps, carefully mending and assembling with steady hands and patient attention.To her, nothing is ever worthless. Frayed edges, torn seams, faded patterns; all still hold stories worth continuing. She is fervent in her belief that things created should not be thrown away, but tended, repaired and given the chance to endure for as long as possible. The Activist Mice are a spirited genus within my handmade textile mouse collection. Each one is a tiny campaigner with a character all of their own, arriving with a hand-held protest sign that reflects their curious, questioning nature. What makes these mice special is that their protest signs are interchangeable. (They have tiny opposable thumbs!) The sign they arrive with is only the beginning. Once an Activist Mouse finds its new home, you and your mouse can decide together what cause they’re championing. Whether it’s heartfelt, humorous, political, personal, or completely absurd, the message is yours to create. Every Activist Mouse is individually handmade as a textile art sculpture, making each one unique. They are a celebration of curiosity, conversation, and the belief that even the smallest voices can make themselves heard. Laura is hand-stitched with reclaimed textiles (Block printed cotton (fabindia), vintage printed cottons and linens, hand embroidered linen, blue/silver furnishing fabric, silk velvets) Laura has black glass eyes and planished copper fingers and toes, her tail is wrapped with the palest cream silk. She stands on top of a vintage Molnlycke spool (Mist Grey). This sculpture is 30cm tall including the spool.
