S. Eliot’s engagement with Dante by placing it in dialogue with Baudelaire. It argues that, while Baudelaire provides Eliot with a language for representing the spiritual desolation of modernity, Dante offers a paradigm through which that desolation can be transformed into a quest for meaning and redemption. Focusing particularly on The Waste Land, the study examines how Dantean echoes and allusions turn the modern city into a contemporary infernal landscape while simultaneously suggesting the possibility of another journey. Rather than treating Dante as a literary source for Eliot, the author presents him as the counterpoint to Baudelaire, and as a crucial presence in Eliot’s movement from fragmentation and spiritual paralysis towards order, renewal, and transcendence.
