Not every Les Paul has to be a sunburst or a goldtop. This Studio wears a Copper Metallic top that glows orange-bronze under the lights, with a black back, sides and neck that make the colour stand out. It’s from 2005, serial number 01035607, and it looks sharp. The Studio was introduced in 1983 as the stripped-back Les Paul for people who wanted the sound without the price tag of the Standard. It drops the binding and the fancy trim, but keeps the recipe that matters, with a maple top on a mahogany body and a set neck. This one has a dark fingerboard with dot inlays, a black pickguard, two humbuckers and chrome hardware, with cream tuner buttons that add a vintage touch to the black headstock. The sound is classic Les Paul, with sustain that holds on and a thick, powerful midrange. The humbuckers give you warm, rounded cleans, and they roar when you push an amp. It suits rock, blues, hard rock and heavier styles equally well. Studios have always been the working player’s Les Paul, and the set neck and chunky body give it a feel that bolt-on guitars can’t match. A black Gibson hardshell with a plush lining is included. A Studio in a colour like this has plenty of Les Paul character without any of the fuss.
