THEA RING

Named for Theia, the Titan goddess of sight and of the bright shining sky. The Greeks gave her the credit for gold itself. Pindar wrote that it is because of her that we hold gold above everything else, that it only shines at all because she looks at it. Her name, in the end, means simply goddess. A marquise cut lab grown diamond of around three carats, close to fourteen millimetres long, lies east to west across the finger. It is held at each point by a single V claw and nothing else. On either side the gold rolls up and over in deep fluted folds, like fabric gathered in a fist, so the stone sits in a bed of light rather than on a setting. The marquise is the one cut that looks back at you. The story goes that Louis XV asked for a diamond shaped like the smile of his Marquise de Pompadour, and the jewellers of Paris gave him this. It is an eye, a boat, a leaf. Set lengthways across the finger it reads as a glance rather than a stare, and the fluting carries that line out into the band. The shape of the ring is pure 1970s, a domed cocktail band with real weight to it. The stone is older than that, and newer. A lab grown diamond is a real diamond. The same carbon, the same hardness, the same way of throwing light. It is grown rather than mined, and we always say so, because where a stone came from is the only difference worth talking about.
