Dána 141 - Dress Watch

Before a ship could be built in Belfast, it had to be drawn. Dána 141 is a dress watch for the people still doing that part: the architects, designers, makers and chefs who start with a line and finish with something that didn't exist before. It is a slim steel rectangle, 28.0 × 39.6mm and just 8.3mm thick, cut to the proportions of a draughtsman's sheet. It is Art Deco in spirit rather than costume. We've borrowed the movement's optimism and discipline (geometry, symmetry, light, precision) and left the 1930s where they are. Why 141? 141 isn't a model number. It's the ratio. The case follows 1:√2, roughly 1:1.41, the proportion of a drawing sheet. Fold a sheet in half and the shape stays the same, which is why the proportion has lasted. At 28.0 × 39.6mm, Dána carries that geometry onto the wrist. Design details Octagonal cartouche. The dial sits inside an octagonal frame, like a plan on a drawing board, or the title block of a technical drawing, mounted and lit. Pinstripe centre panel. It reads two ways: starched drafting linen, or the cut of a draughtsman's suit. Chamfered case facets. Cut steel plate, the yard's material, dressed for evening. The case is 316L stainless steel, brushed and polished, under an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Built in Belfast Nomadic exists to put Belfast on the watchmaking map. Dána is the clearest version of that so far: a design drawn from the city's shipyard drawing offices, made in the place that drew them. Strap and fit Dána comes on a variety of straps from The Strap Tailor, 20mm at the lugs tapering to 16mm at the buckle, with a brushed stainless buckle included. It's 4.5mm thick at the lugs, tapering to roughly 2.5–3mm, so it sits flat under a cuff. Three lengths are available: S (110/65mm), M (120/70mm) and L (130/80mm)
