After you check out you will receive an email to schedule your class sessions. You must redeem sessions via that email to be signed up! Learn to crochet lace images and text in this intermediate workshop! Cleo will help you choose a pattern or design your own chart-pattern to crochet and teach you the (literal) building blocks of filet crochet designs. Students can start with a larger yarn and beginner's sample chart to practice the technique or jump right in with lace weight yarns and an image of their choice. Cleo will also explain how to design a custom chart with the correct gauge, and teach you how to incorporate filet crochet designs into existing patterns for garments or home goods. Feel free to email us any patterns you're interested in and we can let you know if we think it's a good one to start with! RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE We recommend that you are already very comfortable with the chain stitch, half double crochet, double crochet, and how to read your stitches to tell what you've done or where you are in a project. Students without this experience are welcome to sign up, but they may need extra classes to learn all the necessary techniques. LESSON PLAN We recommend you sign up for 2 hours back to back for your first session, then use your remaining 1 hour for a follow-up session. Session 1 - 2 hours: Learn how to read a filet crochet chart & make a practice swatch, or design your own image and start on it! Session 2 - 1 hour: Troubleshooting, incorporating your design into an existing pattern, or finishing techniques. SUGGESTED MATERIALS YARN Filet crochet is typically done with a laceweight cotton (like our favorites Cleá and Gima). But you can use any yarn to do filet crochet! We recommend starting on a worsted or DK weight yarn first if you're wary about this new technique or not used to working with lace weight yarn. Note that the larger the yarn is, the less detail your image can have. The amount of yarn you need will vary depending on what you'd like to make. Our staff can help you estimate when you go in to purchase your materials, or Cleo can help you pick out something suitable at the start of your first session. CROCHET HOOKS If you are using crochet cotton or lace weight yarn, we recommend a hook size between 2–3.5 mm. The smaller the hook, the tighter your gauge will be, and the more contrast your image will have. If you are using a larger yarn we recommend matching your hook size to what is recommended for that yarn. We can help you choose the correct hook size at the start of your first session.
