This small Spanish miquelet-lock pistol is a characteristic example of personal defense weaponry from the late 17th or early 18th century, likely originating from a regional hub of Ripoll. The lock mechanism is recognizable by its robust external mainspring that acts on the heel of the cock. The Miquelet Lock, A precursor to the French flintlock, this design combined the frizzen and pan cover into a single L-shaped piece, offering greater reliability and ease of maintenance in the field. It features the signature "ring-screw" on the cock jaws, allowing for tool-free flint replacement, and horizontal sears that penetrate the lock plate. The walnut stock is heavily carved with floral motifs, and the brass-reinforced butt is designed to be used as a blunt impact weapon after the single shot was fired. While Juan de Prat (or Joan Prat) is documented as a master gunmaker and silversmith in the Barcelona region during this era, his work is particularly associated with high-quality firearms that balanced functional durability with the ornate Baroque aesthetic seen here.
