This striking Iridato vase is a masterclass in post-modern Murano glassmaking by Sergio Rossi. Known for his ability to layer multiple historic techniques into a single, high-energy composition, Rossi creates a piece that feels both rooted in ancient tradition and boldly futuristic. The vase features a complex, cinched architectural form that transitions from a flared base into a wide, undulating rim. The silhouette is defined by the tension between the fluid internal pattern and the sharp, external sculptural applications. The Fenicio Waves: The body is decorated with an intricate “combed” pattern. Threads of rich amber-gold glass have been pulled and festooned over a base of mottled azure blue. The blue background features a polvere (powder) effect, giving it a speckled, stone-like depth reminiscent of lapis lazuli. Internal Contrast: The interior of the vase is lined with a dark, amber-black glass, which acts as a “shadow box” to push the vibrant blue and gold colors toward the viewer. Iridescent Sheen: The entire exterior has been treated with an iridescent finish (iridato). This metallic salts application creates a shimmering, oil-slick effect that dances across the surface, reflecting shades of magenta, violet, and deep peacock green. Applied Sculptural “Wings”: Flanking the body are several thick, dark iridescent glass applications. These “fins” or “wings” are pulled into organic, three-dimensional shapes that add a dramatic, sculptural weight to the piece and catch the light from every angle.
