The Nextbit Robin is a cult collectible — a cloud-first smartphone that was years ahead of its time. Designed by former HTC and Google engineers, it raised $1.3 million on Kickstarter in 2015 and shipped to just over 3,000 backers before being acquired by Razer in January 2017, halting sales almost immediately. Only a very limited number of units were ever sold to the general public. Its defining innovation was intelligent cloud storage management: unused apps were automatically archived to the cloud and restored with a single tap, while photos were dynamically synced at optimal resolution. The Robin's distinctive two-tone mint and grey polycarbonate design remains instantly recognisable and unlike anything before or since. Acquired by Razer, who used it as the basis for the original Razer Phone — making the Robin the direct ancestor of gaming smartphone culture.
