John Banovich Cool Whites, 1996 oil on Belgian linen 22h x 15w in 55.88h x 38.10w cm $16,500 "In “Cool Whites,” I wanted to paint a moment between two rhinos at the edge of a muddy waterhole. One is standing, steady and alert, while the other is resting low in the mud, letting the heat and weight of the day sink away. What drew me in was the light. Those cool, pale whites sliding across their thick skin, catching on folds, shoulders, and faces. Against the warm earth and brown water, those lighter tones feel almost like a breath of air. The mud is messy and heavy, but the light makes the scene feel calm. Two ancient-looking animals simply being there, close together, sharing the same space.
