The Orangerie in Full Splendour Smocked Dress

Sewn in a richly printed fabric of the deepest midnight black, this extraordinary dress is alive from collar to hem with the most exuberant botanical print. Generous vermillion and amber roses bloom across the fabric in full, painterly abundance. Vivid olive and citron green leaves thread between the blooms with the confident energy of a garden at its absolute peak, while tiny white star-shaped daisies scatter across the dark ground like sparks from a fire. The hand-smocked bodice is worked right up to the round neckline, gathering the entire width of the print into a tightly pleated. It creates a richly textured panel that showcases the full drama of the fabric. The smocking is dense and masterful, its stitches drawing creating a rhythmic composition of remarkable craftsmanship. Short puffed sleeves billow from the shoulder, each one embroidered at the cuff in coordinating tones. Self-covered buttons fasten the back above a generous butterfly bow that crowns the silhouette with a final flourish. A dress that does not enter a room so much as illuminate it.
