A Green-Glazed Pottery Figure of a Dog

Eastern Han Dynasty, Henan Province, China, 25–220 CE A glazed terracotta dog created as a mingqi funerary figure during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Depicted in an alert stance with detailed collar and harness elements, the sculpture reflects the practical and symbolic role of dogs within Han domestic life. The raised head and slightly open mouth emphasize vigilance and guardianship. The figure was originally covered in a green glaze that has turned pale and iridescent upon long exposure to water. Sculptures of this type were placed within burial chambers to provide protection and companionship for the deceased in the afterlife.
