Unusual Primitive ''Sack Back'' Windsor Armchair

Unusual Primitive ''Sack Back'' Windsor Armchair

Brand: Robert Young Antiques

With Saddled Seat and Multiple Spindles Steam Bent Ash and Sycamore and Traces of Historic Painted Surface English, West Country, c. 1780 23'' high x 19'' wide x 12'' deep A delightfully graphic and sculptrual primitive armchiar or "sack back" style, with low slung upper benwood bow enclosing a gallery of eleven spindles. The two bows are fashioned from steam-bent ash and are set above a solid sycamore saddled seat, raised on turned stick legs joined by H stretchers. This example is in genuine original "as found" condition, with traces of several layer of historic paint and multiple scars and bruises, commensurate with its age, materials and function. It is in fully functional condition and exudes a unique individuality and great character, typical of the most interesting pieces of vernacular Windsor constructed furniture. Ref: 8261
