Schumann Arzberg was founded in Bavaria in 1881 by Christian Heinrich Schumann; after his death in 1884, his son Carl and later descendants ran the company for more than a century, distributing through their own New York corporation in the 1920s and '30s. In 1990, Schumann entered a strategic alliance with Gebrüder Frank GmbH & Co. KG, but the company ran into financial difficulty and closed by 1994. This piece is backstamped "Schumann Arzberg Germany, Tradition seit 1881," dating it to the 1980s–1994 window. The second mark, E & R, belongs to Ebeling & Reuss — a Philadelphia-based importer founded in 1886 that distributed fine European china, including Schumann's, to the United States for 116 years before being acquired by the Strathmore Corporation in 2002.
