The Maneki Neko, or “beckoning cat”, is one of Japan’s best-known good-luck symbols, traditionally associated with welcoming good fortune, people and prosperity. What is a netsuke? Netsuke have their origins in traditional Japanese dress. As kimono had no pockets, small personal belongings were carried in containers suspended from the obi sash. A netsuke was the small carved toggle used to secure the cord and prevent it from slipping through the sash. Originally functional objects, netsuke gradually became highly detailed miniature works of craftsmanship.
