Brown Wooden Rosemaling Platter

This is one of the prettiest Rosemaling pieces we’ve seen in a while. The artwork and attention to details is superb, the colors are gorgeous and the condition is as if it was painted yesterday. In fact, the platter is signed by the artist Liv Holm in 1986 so it’s over 50 years old. We have another piece – just as fabulous – from the same artist and these two items could easily be displayed as a set. As with the other piece, this platter was purchased in Kråkerøy in South Norway. Most people think about mountains when they think about Norway, but the south coast is stunning with dozens of small islands in Norway’s southern archipelago. After a long winter, many Norwegians flee to the south coast to bathe off the smooth rocky beaches called “svaberg” in Norwegian — there’s really no direct English word for svaberg but see the picture below. The color combinations on the platter are very pleasing; painted against a brown background that fades to maroon, the Telemark-style Rosemaling decorations are in cream colors, golds, greens and browns. Accents are in cream. The fading brown-to-maroon colors give the design a depth. Both pieces have woman’s name on the back that is not the artists name; Reidun Stene. We can only assume Reidun was the previous owner of both pieces. The platter is just under 14″ in diameter and stands 1″ tall. It comes with a hanger if you want to hang it on your wall.
