Antique Japanese Meiji Kodansu Tansu Marquetry Table Cabinet Jewelry Chest 1880

A fine antique Japanese marquetry and parquetry Meiji period Jewelry chest, table cabinet or Kodansu, circa 1880. The cabinet is intricately inlaid with geometric marquetry and parquetry styling (known as Yosegi-Zaiku). The inlay is composed of native timbers such as Hinoki (Japanese cypress), Keyaki (Japanese Elm), and Kurogaki (Black Persimmon). The two front swinging doors with the original lock and key, pull back to reveal a multi-drawer miniature storage chest containing six inner drawers with brass bail handles. The base of the cabinet has a full-width drawer, both the sides and rear of the cabinet is also finely inlaid with marquetry, allowing the cabinet to sit in the middle of a room. The cabinet has the original hand-wrought decorative engraved brass corner mounts, ornate handle & lock-plates plates, and matching drop handles. Condition is excellent, this beautiful chest made by a highly skilled Japanese cabinetmaker in the late 1800s is ready to grace your space.
