"Portrait of Qusuquzah #8" is a celebrated mixed-media artwork created by Mickalene Thomas in 2008 that features her long-term muse, Qusuquzah, projecting a serene and unapologetically confident gaze. Drawing heavily on 1970s fashion, dense patterning, and bold ornamentation, the highly stylized composition reclaims and celebrates Black femme beauty, power, and intimacy. In early 2026, Thomas collaborated with the fine art platform Avant Arte to issue a limited edition of 99 archival pigment prints based on this original masterpiece. This specialized release utilized heavy Somerset paper and six distinct silkscreen layers—incorporating gloss varnish, matte seals, metallic shimmer, and glitter—to meticulously recreate the intense, tactile patchwork texture characteristic of Thomas's physical paintings.
