Sansai Chawan by Tetsu Suzuki

A Sansai Chawan by Tetsu Suzuki, a ceramic artist based in Tajimi. The powerful cylindrical body is defined by faceted surfaces, over which green, amber, and creamy yellow-white glazes overlap to create a vivid Sansai landscape. While the colors retain their individual character, they also melt naturally into one another, revealing a different expression from every angle. One of the most distinctive features is the texture of the clay surface. After forming the body, Suzuki applies additional clay by hand and then refines the surface, producing unique areas of crawling, swelling, and flowing texture. The contrast between the sharp geometry of the faceted form and the organic quality of the hand-worked surface is one of the bowl’s strongest visual elements. Inside the bowl, the glaze shifts from deep green toward blue, creating a sense of depth quite different from the bold Sansai colors of the exterior.
