LORD PROTECTOR
Alternative cover for Sunrunner’s Fire (The Dragon Prince #3) by Melanie Rawn After submitting his concept sketch, Michael realized that the anatomy of the dragon’s wings was inconsistent with the previous two books he’d done for the Dragon Prince trilogy by Melanie Rawn. He addressed the issue in this full-scale painting that he turned in to DAW Books. One small hitch…they preferred the wings as rendered in the concept. Michael ultimately completed an entirely new painting with wings to match his errant sketch. While DAW published DRAGON FIRE as the cover, LORD PROTECTOR was completed first and represents the artist’s initial vision for the book. In addition to small differences in the wings, the protagonist is cradling a hatchling, echoing a changing relationship with dragons that was so important in the trilogy. This is a rare opportunity to own a Whelan dragon—one of the most sought after subjects of his illustrations.
