93 POINTS - HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION THE STORY Yangarra Estate Vineyard is a single-vineyard estate in Blewitt Springs, at the northern edge of McLaren Vale, South Australia. The estate specializes in southern Rhône varieties, grown using certified organic and biodynamic practices. Yangarra's GSM is inspired by the traditional blends of the southern Rhône, combining Grenache's fragrance and silky fruit with elegant Shiraz and structured Mourvèdre. THE VINEYARD The 2022 GSM comes entirely from Yangarra's elevated Blewitt Springs estate, situated approximately 175-210 metres above sea level. The Grenache component includes mature vines approximately 71 years old, while the Shiraz vines are 18-22 years old and the Mourvèdre approximately 13 years old. The estate's sandy and ironstone soils over ancient North Maslin Sands contribute freshness, fragrance and distinctive mineral character. VINTAGE The 2022 growing season was slightly cooler than 2021, with favourable winter rainfall followed by mild conditions during flowering and fruit set. A cool ripening period from late January through the March harvest allowed the grapes to develop excellent ripeness and intensity while retaining freshness and natural acidity. WINEMAKING Each variety was handled separately, destemmed and selectively sorted, with 50% whole berries retained. Fermentation occurred naturally with wild yeasts, followed by very gentle extraction and a minimum 14-day maceration. Selected Grenache parcels received extended maceration. The final wine was matured for 11 months in a combination of older French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. TASTING NOTES Rich yet beautifully balanced, with dark raspberry, plum and liquorice complemented by dried herbs, pepper and savoury spice. The palate offers impressive concentration and depth, with juicy red and dark fruits framed by fine, structured tannins and fresh acidity. Savoury mineral and spice notes carry through to a long, vibrant finish. Yangarra began converting to organic and biodynamic farming in 2008 and has been certified organic and biodynamic by Australian Certified Organic (ACO) since 2012.
