Summer Rain

In Summer Rain, David Wilson transforms one of Salt Spring Island’s most familiar landmarks into a luminous study of rain, reflection and evening light. The historic Mouat’s building in Ganges glows against a deep blue night sky, its warm storefront lights spilling across the rain-soaked pavement below. Gold, amber and cream break apart in the water, creating an almost abstract field of shimmering reflections beneath the more architectural upper half of the composition. Wilson’s expressive handling of colour and surface gives the scene a wonderfully cinematic quality. What might otherwise be an everyday island view becomes something atmospheric and quietly nostalgic — the familiar made extraordinary for a moment after the rain. For anyone connected to Salt Spring Island, Summer Rain carries an additional pleasure: the unmistakable recognition of place. Yet the painting stands equally well beyond its local subject, balancing dramatic light, rich colour and reflected movement in a contemporary Canadian streetscape.
