Heianjō Sagami no Kami Minamoto Rai Yoshimichi NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate | Kyoto Master Swordsmith | Dated 1750 | Superb Kyo-Shinto Work Signed "Heianjō Sagami no Kami Minamoto Rai Yoshimichi – Auspicious Day, November 1750", this elegant katana was forged by Sagami no Kami Yoshimichi, one of the most accomplished swordsmiths of Kyoto during the mid-Edo period. Certified Tokubetsu Hozon (Especially Worthy of Preservation) by the NBTHK, it represents the refined craftsmanship that made the Kyoto Yoshimichi lineage highly respected among collectors. Yoshimichi inherited the traditions of the Sōshū school, combining exceptional cutting performance with remarkable artistic beauty. This blade displays a bright, finely forged jihada with excellent clarity, while the hamon begins with the distinctive Kyō-yakidashi, a hallmark of quality Kyoto workmanship. The temper line develops into a lively koshi-biraki gunome-chōji midare, enriched with deep nie, dramatic tobiyaki (isolated hardened patches), and abundant internal activity, creating a vibrant and highly expressive appearance throughout the blade. The sword is mounted in an attractive koshirae, highlighted by an elegant tsuba inlaid with the Big Dipper (Hokuto Shichisei) in gold—a tasteful and unusual decorative motif that complements the refined character of the blade. A beautifully preserved example from one of Kyoto's finest Edo-period masters, this katana offers an outstanding balance of historical significance, artistic sophistication, and collector appeal. Koshirae Ornate Mouting This katana is preserved in an attractive Edo-period koshirae of exceptional taste. Particularly noteworthy is the finely pierced iron tsuba, inlaid in gold with the Big Dipper (Hokuto Shichisei)—a rare celestial design associated with guidance and longevity. The rich purple silk tsuka-ito over white rayskin, elegant shakudō menuki, and beautifully lacquered saya create a refined mounting worthy of a high-quality Kyoto blade. The blade comes with a Certificate of NBTHK Japan Sword Preservation Society - Tokubetsu Hozon Paper (Extremely Well-preserved sword) BLADE: Registration Certificate (Torokusho): #Tokyo-331184 *Every authentic antique Japanese sword legally possessed in Japan must be accompanied by an official Japanese Sword Registration Certificate (Torokusho) issued by the Prefectural Board of Education.
