Always use natural detergents and keep away from chemical detergents and prolonged sunlight to preserve the integrity of your mat. How Often Should I Wash My Öko Living Yoga Mat? Our mats are naturally antibacterial and antifungal — wash every 3–5 months depending on your practice. There is no need to prewash before first use. Hand Washing (Recommended — Especially for Multicolored Mats) Fill a tub with cold water. Add natural laundry detergent or soap nut tea (see below). Agitate gently — you will not see suds like conventional detergent. For darker colors like clay, transfer to a washing machine rinse and spin cycle to remove excess water. Hang dry in the shade. The Chakra and Elemental multicolored mats are hand wash only to keep lighter colors bright and prevent any color bleeding. Machine Washing Wash with cold water on a gentle cycle. Add a cotton pouch of 4–5 soap nuts or soap nut tea for a deeper clean. You may also use a natural detergent — test a small corner first to ensure compatibility with the natural dyes. A front-load washing machine or one without an agitator is required to maintain the highest quality of the handwoven fabric. If your washer has an agitator, please hand wash. Drying Always hang dry in the shade. Do not machine dry. Do not roll the mat while wet. Between Washes Wipe down with a damp cloth, then hang to dry. Sun & Heat Exposure You can use the mat outdoors, but avoid prolonged direct sunlight to prevent color lightening. Keep out of temperatures above 95°F — the natural latex can soften at high heat and may stick to itself if left folded or crumpled. If this occurs, warm gently with a hair dryer or warm water before carefully pulling apart. Do not pull apart without warming first, as this could damage the mat. After hot yoga classes over 100°F, allow the bottom of the mat to cool before rolling. Always roll (never fold) to store. How to Make Soap Nut Tea Soak 4–6 bagged soap nuts in a cup of very hot water for 1–3 minutes. Pour the liquid into the wash or tub. Each bag of 4–6 nuts can be reused 3–5 times — dry the bag between uses. The nuts will turn soft and grayish when spent. They have a naturally vinegary scent but leave no smell on your mat or clothing. Soap nuts release saponin — an effective, hypoallergenic, biodegradable organic cleaning agent that replaces sulfates, synthetic chemicals, and toxins. Our soap nuts are wildcrafted from the foothills of the Himalayas. Keeping Colors Vibrant Our mats are exceptionally vibrant for natural dyes, but natural dyes are not as light-fast as chemical dyes. Some fading may occur over time, especially after the first wash. The #1 way to reduce fading is to keep your mat out of direct sunlight. Hand washing preserves color best. We invite you to see any color shift as part of the beautiful wabi-sabi nature of plant dyes — a living reminder of your commitment to a healthier, more vibrant world. Note: Non-natural laundry detergents may alter the color of the mat. Always follow the care directions above. Frequently Asked Questions What makes this mat different from a regular yoga mat?
