Mondays, October 5, 19: The One Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa (Part I & II) Milarepa’s songs are among the greatest treasures of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Far more than poetry, they are spontaneous expressions of awakening born from years of solitary retreat in the Himalayas. Through stories, dialogue, and song, Milarepa reveals how every difficulty, emotion, and life circumstance can become part of the path to liberation. Across these two evenings, Rinpoche will introduce the life and realization of Milarepa while exploring the profound practical instructions contained within his songs. The teachings offer guidance on meditation, renunciation, compassion, devotion, and the direct recognition of the nature of mind, making them deeply relevant for modern practitioners. They arise from a lineage of practitioners who have devoted their lives to meditation, retreat, and the direct realization of the Buddha’s teachings. Rinpoche stands within this unbroken tradition, following the example of the great yogis of the lineage, he completed twelve years of retreat under the guidance of his teachers. During these years of continuous practice, he immersed himself in meditation, Mahamudra, and the traditional yogic disciplines that have been transmitted from master to disciple for centuries. Such long retreat is not simply a period of isolation; it is a lifelong commitment to transforming the mind through direct experience. The tradition traces its spiritual heritage to the great Indian Mahasiddhas Tilopa and Naropa, through Marpa, and ultimately to Jetsun Milarepa, whose songs remain one of the most beloved expressions of awakening in Tibetan Buddhism. These teachings have been preserved not only through texts but through the lived realization of accomplished meditation masters. Because Rinpoche has received these teachings within this authentic lineage, practiced them extensively in long retreat, and continues to transmit them as a lineage holder, he is able to present Milarepa’s songs not simply as historical or literary works, but as practical instructions for awakening that remain profoundly relevant today. His approach combines the depth of traditional training with a warm, accessible style of teaching, inviting students to discover how Milarepa’s extraordinary songs speak directly to the challenges of modern life practioners. Through these teachings, participants are invited to encounter not only the words of one of Himalaya's greatest yogis, but the living wisdom of a lineage that continues to flourish through dedicated practitioners and authentic transmission. Monday, October 26: The Mahamudra of Tara (Part III) The concluding evening will be dedicated to the Mahamudra of Tara, a profound practice that unites the awakened activity and compassion of Arya Tara with the direct realization of the nature of mind. The evening will conclude with the oral transmission (lung), allowing participants to establish a direct connection with the lineage and continue the practice according to the traditional Buddhist transmission. Arya Tara is revered as the embodiment of enlightened compassion in action, swiftly responding to the needs of beings while guiding practitioners toward the direct recognition of the nature of mind. The Mahamudra approach to Tara reveals that the awakened qualities symbolized by the deity are inseparable from the mind’s own luminous and empty nature. This teaching is therefore not simply an introduction to Tara, but an invitation into a living tradition of meditation that has been transmitted continuously for centuries from the Indian Mahasiddhas, through the great masters of the Kagyu lineage, to the present day. Participants will receive guidance rooted in authentic experience, enabling them to cultivate both the compassionate activity of Tara and the profound realization of Mahamudra in their own practice. TEACHER BIO Khenpo Könchok Tashi Rinpoche is an internationally respected master of Tibetan Buddhism, renowned for his deep realization and teachings in the Kagyu tradition. Born in Ladakh in 1963 during the sacred month of Saka Dawa, he entered monastic life at age six and earned his Khenpo title by the age of twenty-six. After years of serving as the chief abbot of the Drikung Kagyu Institute in India, he spent over a decade in solitary retreat in the Himalayas. Rinpoche is one of the few current masters to have completed the twelve-year cycle of meditation retreat based solely on the Teachings of Mahamudra. He is renowned for the clarity and simplicity of his teachings, as well as for his profound wisdom. His great knowledge of Tibetan divination, his infinite benevolence, and his legendary good humor bring joy, help, and comfort to all who meet him.
