Region: Kiambu, Kenya Process: Washed Variety: SL28, SL34 Altitude: 1900 masl We Taste: Mango, Hibiscus, Pink Peppercorn Malaki Estate is a family owned farm, managed by mother and daughter team, Florence and Jessica Marigi. The farm was originally planted in 1959 by Edward Marigi, and throughout the years, they have not introduced newer, hybrid varieties, such as Ruiru 11 and Batian. Instead, their farm is comprised solely of SL28 and SL34 trees which are highly regarded for their quality potential and the classic and beloved Kenyan coffee flavor profile. That being said, recent testing has started to challenge what we understand about varieties and plant genetics in Kenya, but either way, this coffee carries hallmark Kenyan flavors. In the cup we find flavors of mango, blood orange, and pink peppercorn, alongside a tart red acidity that reminds us of hibiscus, raspberry, and rhubarb. There is also a subtle floral quality that reminds us of magnolia blossom and white tea. We're also excited to share this coffee as it is the first single farm Kenyan coffee we've had on our menu. Typically, the lots we purchase from Kenya are comprised of cherries collected from many smallholder farmers, that are then processed at a centralized washing station. Coffees from many larger estates in don't tend to have the rigorous picking, sorting, and processing protocols that the quality-focused washing stations have. However, in recent years, we have seen more single producer and estate coffees that are exceptional. While each type of production and producer is important to support, we hope to see a continuing focus on quality with Kenyan estates, as it's evident the ceiling can be very high.
