Genesis of Belonging 200x200cm
Genesis of Belonging explores how we rebuild our sense of home after life changes us. The work was inspired by my own experience of moving to Australia more than a decade ago. Over time I realised that belonging is not something we eventually find—it is something we slowly create. You leave behind the place where everything is familiar, yet it takes years before a new place truly feels like home. Between those two worlds lies an invisible landscape of memory, resilience and transformation. Rather than depicting a physical location, this artwork maps that emotional terrain. Layered topographic markings trace the unseen paths we travel through migration, loss, separation and renewal. Gold leaf pathways represent hope and the quiet belief that every step forward shapes who we become. Hand-stitched freshwater pearls connect fragmented surfaces, symbolising the relationships, experiences and moments of repair that gradually weave a new sense of belonging. Created with textured mixed media, natural materials and hand-painted topographical lines, the work reflects the idea that identity is never fixed. Like a landscape, it is continually formed by the places we inhabit, the people we meet and the journeys we take. Although rooted in my own story of rebuilding life in Australia, Genesis of Belonging speaks to a universal experience: the search for a place where we no longer have to explain who we are, because we finally feel at home within ourselves.
