This authentic vintage mid century modern Womb lounge chair designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll dates to the early 1950s. Retaining its original molded fiberglass shell, the chair has been professionally restored and reupholstered in Knoll Facet fabric in “Zest,” a vibrant green textile that complements Saarinen’s sculptural design. The chair has also been fitted with a new Knoll-branded polished steel rod base. Model 70 Womb Chair The iconic Model 70 Womb Chair was designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll in 1946 in response to Florence Knoll’s request for “a chair that was like a basket full of pillows—something she could really curl up in.” The resulting design combined exceptional comfort with Saarinen’s distinctive sculptural aesthetic, becoming one of the defining works of postwar American modern furniture. The chair features a molded fiberglass shell with foam padding and upholstery supported by a tubular steel rod base. The use of molded fiberglass—an emerging material adapted from technologies developed for the aircraft and marine industries during the Second World War—allowed Saarinen to achieve the chair’s distinctive sculptural form while providing exceptional comfort. Provenance This restored vintage Saarinen Womb chair is part of a collection of Knoll furniture originally specified and customized in the early 1950s for the SS Spartan and SS Badger, luxury ferry liners that operated between Michigan and Wisconsin across Lake Michigan. The vessels were furnished with period mid century modern interiors that included designs by Eero Saarinen for Knoll and Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller. The Saarinen Womb chairs and settees were specially configured to meet the functional requirements of the ships while preserving Saarinen’s original design. Through the efforts of multiple parties, this historically significant collection was preserved and is now being professionally restored for continued use in residential and hospitality interiors. CONDITION Professionally restored and in excellent condition. Reupholstered in Knoll Facet fabric in the color “Zest.” Fitted with a new Knoll-branded polished steel rod base with polished chrome finish and stainless steel and nylon glides.
