Winemakers Dinner: Coal Pit Masterclass with Anika Wilner

Thursday 8th October One vineyard. Ten wines. The winemaker at your table. Coal Pit is one of the few Gibbston estates where everything happens on site. Grapes grown, handpicked and made into wine on a single, fully certified organic vineyard. For one night, the whole range comes to The Wine Room, poured and told by the person who makes it, winemaker Anika Willner. Anika joined Coal Pit in 2018 with vintages in Burgundy, Oregon, Germany and South Africa behind her. She was named one of New Zealand's Young Winemakers to Watch, and has driven the vineyard's move to full organic certification. Fresh from the 2026 harvest, Anika arrives with stories straight from the vineyard. A cold, testing season in Gibbston asked for what she calls "careful judgement and thousands of small decisions that ultimately shape what ends up in the glass". As she reminds us, it is often the most challenging vintages that produce the greatest gems, and Coal Pit's cellar library of every vintage ever made is the proof. Which brings us to the heart of the night, a rare treat: a four-vintage vertical of Tiwha Pinot Noir (2023, 2021, 2019 and 2017), drawn from that library, and including the 2019 that won the New Zealand Pinot Noir Trophy at the 2023 International Wine Challenge.
