Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the death of Sir Winston Churchill KG in 1965. The design features his Garter Stall Plate from St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the highest order of knighthood in Britain, founded by King Edward III in 1348. Sir Winston Churchill was nominated as a Knight of the Garter on 24th April 1953 and invested and installed over a year later, on 14th June 1954. Sir Winston Churchill (1874–1965) was a British statesman, orator, and author who served as Prime Minister twice (1940–1945, 1951–1955). He is best remembered for his leadership during the Second World War and for leading Britain to victory against Nazi Germany, famously inspiring the nation with his speeches. A Conservative leader and Nobel laureate, he was pivotal in shaping 20th-century history. Sir Winston Churchill Stands as one of the most consequential statesmen of the twentieth century and an enduring symbol of courage, leadership and democratic resolve. The coin design features his Garter Stall Plate, a garter belt or strap with the words “Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pens”. Plus his full name and the date of his birth (1874) and his death (1965).
