the stilt bench

the stilt bench rests unevenly on purpose, one end held by a pair of travertine blocks, the other by a single slim bar of metal. the bouclé upholstery runs the full length in one soft, rounded volume, pillowed and unbroken, so the weight of the seat feels almost airborne above its supports. the travertine blocks are left raw at the edges, their pitted surface and looping veins contrasting against the texture of the fabric they carry. the metal leg does the opposite, disappearing into a thin line that barely registers against the floor. together the two supports read like different hands holding up the same object, one solid and one almost weightless. from the front, the bench looks planted, grounded by the stone. from the side, it tips toward the metal end and seems to lift off the ground entirely. the stilt bench plays this tension deliberately, letting mass and lightness sit on either end of the same piece.
